Becoming an examiner

Examiners mark Writing and Speaking responses against published band descriptors. The work is remote and scheduled: you are given a set of responses and a deadline, not a shift.

• A degree, or an equivalent professional qualification
• A recognised English language teaching qualification, or demonstrable assessment experience
• At least three years teaching or assessing English to adults
• Reliable internet and a quiet place to listen to speaking recordings

Training and standardisation

New examiners complete a standardisation exercise before marking live responses: a set of pre-marked scripts and recordings where your bands are compared against the agreed ones. You mark live work only once you are inside tolerance.

Standardisation is repeated periodically. It is not a test of loyalty to a number — where an examiner consistently and defensibly disagrees, the descriptor is what gets reviewed.
